River birch grows wild along the Mississippi River in southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. It is commonly planted because of its attractive, reddish-brown, peeling bark. It naturally occurs on floodplains and it can be planted on similar, moist, silty soil as well as on rich, well-drained, upland loam soil.
